Abby and Ryan McKinley have been divorced for three years. Since their split, they have not seen each other but a phone call from Abby’s mother changes everything. Ryan is invited to Abby’s parents’ anniversary party and incidentally finds out the Abby never told her parents they were divorced. In Ryan’s eyes, he believes that God has opened the door for him to get Abby back because he still loves her. When he shows up at her doorstep, he knows that this will not be easy and that he will have to put in a lot of work to breakdown the barriers around her heart.
This was my first read by Denise Hunter and I must say that she hit on a lot of topics and matters of the heart such as forgiveness, judging, verbal and physical abuse, and unconditional love. I loved that Ryan loved Abby regardless of the fact that she pushed his buttons and could be very skittish. I was also surprised that there were certain things that Abby and Ryan had not discussed before or during their marriage. You eventually find out why and it all makes sense somehow. I think the only thing that frustrated me was Abby’s reluctance to open up about her past and let Ryan in. I honestly thought Ryan was a great guy with some flaws and I loved that he wasn’t afraid to show his emotions. I also loved Gillian (her best friend). She was patient and loving and there for Abby. Denise Hunter brings together a heart warming tale of love reunited and reconnecting with God. I look forward to reading more of her work in the future.
