Excerpt:

1986

I hated when Daddy hit Mommy. When he drank, he became an absolute monster. Someone I didn’t recognize. Nothing like the sweet doting father and Pastor he allowed everyone else to see. Like right now. I could hear them arguing. Their voices escalating. The same argument every time.

“Look, I worked a twelve hour shift today and I don’t feel like having this conversation, Earl. Take your drunk behind to bed!”

“Oh so you’re just going to throw your job in my face huh? Like I don’t want to work?!”

“God, I wish you would stop with this woe is me crap. I’ve had it up to here with your self-pity. God spared your life in that car accident but all you can do is talk about what you can’t do anymore.”

About a year ago, Daddy and Mommy had been on their way to a church banquet in Arlington when a truck had run a red light and not only hit but totaled their car. They’d both survived but Daddy’s hand had been pinned in the driver’s side door and it hadn’t been the same since. He couldn’t work because it was his dominant hand that had been smashed. And he blamed Mommy for what happened. He blamed her for everything. I thought it was so unfair.

“You wanna repeat that Patrice?” I heard Daddy say. I could tell he was about to snap.

I heard her sigh, like she was just tired of this merry go-round. “Nothing…just nothing.”

“Say it again!” He roared at her and I jumped. My heart began beating frantically and my palms began to sweat. God please don’t let him hit Mommy! I prayed. I prayed hard because once he unleashed his wrath on her, I would be next. I heard his big feet move and then my mother yelped. Then I heard her scream as he pushed her into the door.

“I hate when you spew that God spared me crap!” Slap.

“Stop Earl!” Mommy screamed

“I’ll stop when I’m good and ready! You don’t run me! I’m the man of this house, not you!” Daddy bellowed. Slap. Soon after I heard the doorknob being turned and I hightailed it up to my room and locked myself in my closet. Putting my hands over my ears, I prayed again. “Please God. Don’t let him hurt me. I’ll be a good girl. I promise.”

“Sky! Where are you?!” Daddy roared.

“Leave her alone Earl!” My mother screamed

I heard his heavy feet trudging up the steps and tears seeped out from the corners of my eyes. He’s going to find me. He always finds me. I kept praying though. I refused to stop calling out to God. My closet door slammed open but I didn’t open my eyes. My daddy yanked me into his arms and shook me.

“You heard me calling you girl! Got me looking all over this house for you, Sky! I’m gonna beat your butt!”

“No! Daddy please!” I sobbed.

“Shut up your blubbering girl!” I opened my eyes to see his hand lift to strike me but before he could Mommy struck him in the back of his head. With what, I wasn’t sure. I was just relieved that he hadn’t hurt me. I fell down on the floor and he fell beside me. Quickly, I scampered away from him. Afraid he would grab me again.

“Are you okay, baby?”

“Yes.” I whimpered.

“I’m so sorry I let this go on for so long. He will never hurt you or me again.”

My eyes grew big as I saw her point a gun at my Daddy. I began to tremble at the thought of never seeing him again. I didn’t want him to die but he’s hurt us and he would keep doing it. “Mommy…”

She glanced over at me for a second. “No Sky. I know you’re too young to fully understand but your Daddy is not going to stop hurting us. I’ve tried to get him help but he won’t take it. I can’t live like this anymore.” Tears seeped from her eyes and her hand shook but I knew she was serious. How did we end up like this? I wondered.

BOOM!

I jumped at the loudness of the gunshot. She’d shot my Daddy in the head. I began to cry hysterically and ran over to him. “Daddy! Daddy, wake up!” I shook him as best as I could with my small hands but he never moved.

One, single gunshot changed my life forever.

I was only seven when my father was taken from me. I was too young to understand the consequences of what had just happened… what God had allowed to happen…

Let’s Ride Excerpt:
Bronx to the rescue!

Scene starts with Bronx on the phone with Razor.

“You hear anything about another club running through here?” I asked.

“Naw, where you at?”

“Cedar Street, near the townhouses.” I looked around.

“Almost dead around here with only a few people on the streets, but five guys on Harley’s have cornered a guy.”
“On my way,” Razor growled.
I hopped out my cab and the closer I got, the louder I heard the voice I should not have.
“Move out of my fucking way, you big ass beast.” She said.
Oh, fuck no.
Fuck no!?!
“Problem,” one of the guys that was atop his bike asked me.

“Yeah,” I nodded.
All three guys turned to face me and one of them had Shay by the arm.
“Boys, this one here has a problem.” The bigger guy got off of his bike, looking like he consumed way too much beer over the years.
Assessing the guys surrounded Shay, one had to be a leader, the others would follow him. Two were husky like they were former football players and the other was short but bulky. They did not seem like the active types, so counting the odds, I would have to take them before Razor came.
One of them stepped forward, he had a braided beard, with beads on the end, and unkempt hair. This one was their leader.
“You are?” He asked.
“This is Guardian territory.” I did not answer him.
“Ahh, heard about you angels, walking around trying to keep the streets safe.” The rest of them laughed. “What business you have here?”
“This is my town, what business do you have here?” I asked.
“We’re just passing through. Came to collect some information.” He pointed to Shay who was surprisingly quiet. “And we’ll be on our way.”
I nodded my head and assessed my boots before I spit on the ground.
“Problem is, she’s mine.” I pointed to Shay. Her eyebrows rose, but I sent her a quick look of ‘shut the fuck up.’

“Oh, now the little lady didn’t say she belonged to no one. Now did she fellas?” The leader asked.
They all shook their heads and grunted various versions of their bullshit no’s.
“I see.” I stepped closer to the leader and growled, “But I’m telling you, she’s mine.”

Excerpt:

The regular season had started and Shane was back to his normal routine. He looked good, felt good and was playing good all pre-season. The new running back, that was there to replace him, was able to get some play time as well, which did not hinder any of Shane’s statistics. He found that when he was rested up, he could exert more energy. The press room was buzzing and lately asking more “Shane” questions to Matthew. To the point when Matthew said to him, “I wish you would stop being Switzerland. Can you at least talk to them in Morse code?”

Shane erupted in laughter at Matt’s comments, but finally responded with, “Man, I just can’t do it. I thought about it long and hard, but I just can’t. They are like vultures.”

Matt looked at him and said, “I think you didn’t take heed to my warning early on and got burnt, yet never got over it.” He patted Shane on the chest and said, “Some things you got to let go.”

Matt and Shane did not really have the heart to heart conversations, but he respected the guy as a leader and veteran of the sport. He also understood what he meant, to the point where he actually thought about how to rectify his hate-hate relationship with the media.

After their first home game, Shane, Matt and Raymond, the new running back, were at the center table on stage. They all immediately started asking questions, so Matt, being the leader he was, calls on one reporter who had a question for Raymond. Shane spotted the lady reporter that rebuffed him at the bar, he bent over to Matt and said, “Call on the lady reporter in the red shirt.”

Matt looks at him and gives him a knowing smile. Shane shook his head and waved him off. When Raymond finished answering, Matt pointed to the lady and said, “You in the red.”

Her hand was raised, but not in a way that looked like she wanted to be called on. Shane briefly thought, maybe she was right about not being good at the job. When Matt called on her, she looked surprised and caught off guard. She quickly recovered and announced, “Hi, um. I’m Diamond Reeves from WUSA. My question is, what do you guys do for fun besides these awesome press conferences?”

People laughed and even Shane smiled at her wit. He made a note that he liked that. When the room died down, Raymond answered first with, “I sail. It relieves stress for me.”

Matt said, “I hang out with my wife and kids.”

Nobody seemed to think Shane would answer, so when he slid the mic from in front of Matthew, the whole room seemed to turn and face him. Cameras and extended microphones included. They never even gave him his own microphone anymore.

“In my spare time, I work with a few charities and work on my Spanish. But what’s your real question?” Shane asked her, as she stood with her mouth wide open along with the rest of the room.

He thought the question would be a general question for everyone, so he slid the microphone back in front of Matt.

Again, she recovered and said, “Well, Mr. Sinclair, since you asked. I know you and Austin Daniels from the Falcons are good friends, but after that move you put on him.” She shook her head. “You peeped the blitz and ran right past him. You, Matt, saw the opening, passed the ball to Shane for a touchdown, then y’all had the nerve to go for the two-point play and Raymond gets the touchdown. How the hell do you remain friends? I wouldn’t be your friend anymore. Showing me up like that.”

The entire room erupted in laughter at what Shane thought was her cuteness, keen expertise of the game or just her wittiness. Shane even laughed and moved the microphone back in front of him and answered. “That’s funny. Well, to answer your question. Despite this being called a game of football, it’s still a business. And these,” he gestured to his other teammates, “are my business partners, so even though we may not always align, agree and have to run each other over, at the end of the day. We know it’s our job to do so. That’s why we push each other on a daily basis. Austin is a longtime friend and he understands the job very well. So, while it’s a game to you guys, this is our business.”

Diamond smiled at Shane, then nodded her head in approval, agreement or just acknowledgment. Shane couldn’t tell, but he nodded back. No sooner than his head came back up, the other reporters started to fire more questions at Shane. To address all of their questions, he moved the microphone back in front of Matt.

He was done.

SOMETIMES I FEEL…

I feel like I'm losing
myself.
Like I don't know who I am anymore
Like I can't get a grip on my own reality.
It's like I'm stuck
between joy and
sorrow
This in between existence
that is slowly choking
the life out of me
As much as I try
to push it behind
me
It's always there waiting for the
opportunity to engulf
my entire being.
I wish somebody,
anybody could hear
my cry of despair
and anguish.
Too bad they can't
Their too self-absorbed
in their own lives & routines.
To ever notice the pain I'm in.
So, I cry deep inside
Praying for someone to see through
my tough exterior.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

QUOTE OF THE DAY

I love writing, it’s the center of my life. If you don’t love what you do, you’d better find something else to love. Otherwise, you don’t have a reason for living.
