Excerpt:

1986

I hated when Daddy hit Mommy. When he drank, he became an absolute monster. Someone I didn’t recognize. Nothing like the sweet doting father and Pastor he allowed everyone else to see. Like right now. I could hear them arguing. Their voices escalating. The same argument every time.

“Look, I worked a twelve hour shift today and I don’t feel like having this conversation, Earl. Take your drunk behind to bed!”

“Oh so you’re just going to throw your job in my face huh? Like I don’t want to work?!”

“God, I wish you would stop with this woe is me crap. I’ve had it up to here with your self-pity. God spared your life in that car accident but all you can do is talk about what you can’t do anymore.”

About a year ago, Daddy and Mommy had been on their way to a church banquet in Arlington when a truck had run a red light and not only hit but totaled their car. They’d both survived but Daddy’s hand had been pinned in the driver’s side door and it hadn’t been the same since. He couldn’t work because it was his dominant hand that had been smashed. And he blamed Mommy for what happened. He blamed her for everything. I thought it was so unfair.

“You wanna repeat that Patrice?” I heard Daddy say. I could tell he was about to snap.

I heard her sigh, like she was just tired of this merry go-round. “Nothing…just nothing.”

“Say it again!” He roared at her and I jumped. My heart began beating frantically and my palms began to sweat. God please don’t let him hit Mommy! I prayed. I prayed hard because once he unleashed his wrath on her, I would be next. I heard his big feet move and then my mother yelped. Then I heard her scream as he pushed her into the door.

“I hate when you spew that God spared me crap!” Slap.

“Stop Earl!” Mommy screamed

“I’ll stop when I’m good and ready! You don’t run me! I’m the man of this house, not you!” Daddy bellowed. Slap. Soon after I heard the doorknob being turned and I hightailed it up to my room and locked myself in my closet. Putting my hands over my ears, I prayed again. “Please God. Don’t let him hurt me. I’ll be a good girl. I promise.”

“Sky! Where are you?!” Daddy roared.

“Leave her alone Earl!” My mother screamed

I heard his heavy feet trudging up the steps and tears seeped out from the corners of my eyes. He’s going to find me. He always finds me. I kept praying though. I refused to stop calling out to God. My closet door slammed open but I didn’t open my eyes. My daddy yanked me into his arms and shook me.

“You heard me calling you girl! Got me looking all over this house for you, Sky! I’m gonna beat your butt!”

“No! Daddy please!” I sobbed.

“Shut up your blubbering girl!” I opened my eyes to see his hand lift to strike me but before he could Mommy struck him in the back of his head. With what, I wasn’t sure. I was just relieved that he hadn’t hurt me. I fell down on the floor and he fell beside me. Quickly, I scampered away from him. Afraid he would grab me again.

“Are you okay, baby?”

“Yes.” I whimpered.

“I’m so sorry I let this go on for so long. He will never hurt you or me again.”

My eyes grew big as I saw her point a gun at my Daddy. I began to tremble at the thought of never seeing him again. I didn’t want him to die but he’s hurt us and he would keep doing it. “Mommy…”

She glanced over at me for a second. “No Sky. I know you’re too young to fully understand but your Daddy is not going to stop hurting us. I’ve tried to get him help but he won’t take it. I can’t live like this anymore.” Tears seeped from her eyes and her hand shook but I knew she was serious. How did we end up like this? I wondered.

BOOM!

I jumped at the loudness of the gunshot. She’d shot my Daddy in the head. I began to cry hysterically and ran over to him. “Daddy! Daddy, wake up!” I shook him as best as I could with my small hands but he never moved.

One, single gunshot changed my life forever.

I was only seven when my father was taken from me. I was too young to understand the consequences of what had just happened… what God had allowed to happen…

Blade by Avery Flynn~Hot on Ice Anthology

Blade by Avery Flynn

Bad girl Gillie Pike has gone straight, but someone with a lot of money wants to bring her out of retirement to steal the Cup and make sure it’s found in star goalie Flynn Kazakov’s possession. They call him Crazy-kov for a reason and nothing makes him more nuts than his best friend’s sexy little sister who swears she’s the only one who can keep him out of jail and on the ice.

Excerpt

“Now,” Gillie said. “Why don’t we give these people a show they can talk about during the long, cold winter and then you can take me to your house so I can explain everything.”

Fuck. Flynn had forgotten the rest of the bar. He was the hometown boy made good, there was no way everyone wasn’t watching. That thought had half a second to register before the rest of her words shoved it aside. “What kind of show?”

She tugged her bottom lip between her teeth. “Kiss me.”

“I’m not kissing you.” No matter how much he wanted—and God did he want.

“Okay.” She shrugged. “If you insist.”

He had a heartbeat to try to unwind that verbal knot before she shifted so she stood in front of him and then she kissed him. His brain short circuited and all he could do was give in and feel. His hands dropped automatically to her full hips and he hooked his fingers into the belt loops of her jeans and yanked her hard against him. The feel of her mouth, her tongue twisting around his, and the rest of her pressed close from hips to chest, was almost too much. No. It wasn’t enough. There were too many clothes. Too many people watching. Too much time had passed without tasting her. Her hands were tangled in his hair then sliding down his chest, leaving a trail of fire before she pressed her palms firm against him and broke the kiss.

Her chest heaved and her eyes were dilated. She let out a shaky breath, the kind that just made him harder because he didn’t want to hear her sigh, he needed to hear her scream.

Gillie blinked away the hunger in her eyes, replacing it with something more vacant and less real. She snuggled in close and let her hands glide down his shirt and dangerously close to his waistband. For anyone watching—and no doubt the whole fucking bar was—it was a show all right. They didn’t know it was all fake, but he sure did. Lies were the only truth to Gillie Pike. What he didn’t comprehend yet was why she was doing this.

She looked up at him with those lying eyes of hers, then leaned in close and dropped her voice to as much of a whisper as the noisy bar allowed. “Now, let’s get out of here before you fuck this up, lose your career and end up behind bars.”

What Would Jesus Post? Seven Principles Christians Should Follow in Social Media By Brian D. Wassom

Social media gives each of us enormous power to influence others for good or ill. But far too many Christians ignore the opportunities and undermine their own reputations through thoughtless words shared online. This book comes directly from the author’s experiences as an attorney and a church leader and offers seven simple guidelines for exercising Biblical wisdom in social media.

I found these guidelines presented by Mr. Wassom to not only be for Christians but for everyday interactions on social media. Facebook is used a lot as the main example for which we should watch what say. The #1 principle in this book is To Think Before You Post. I’m sure we have all fallen victim to this. We post what is exactly our minds and in most instances have no filter. Our thoughtless words and actions can have a lasting impact on others so we need to be careful. The author himself even mentions falling victim to this which I thought was awesome. If you can do a self-examination of yourself and your actions, to me, that is the first step to doing better. The author also mentions making good use of our time. For example, scrolling aimlessly through social media. This I am guilty of. I get so caught up in looking through everyone’s status updates and photos that I have lost valuable time and could have been doing something else. These are just a couple of common pitfalls that believers can fall into. I encourage everyone to read this book and learn something from it and most importantly…apply it.

Let’s Ride is a book filled with excitement including the return of Lori, which completely shocks the small town of Manor and Dessy taking on an unexpected member of the Guardians.

Let’s Ride Excerpt:
Bronx to the rescue!

Scene starts with Bronx on the phone with Razor.

“You hear anything about another club running through here?” I asked.

“Naw, where you at?”

“Cedar Street, near the townhouses.” I looked around.

“Almost dead around here with only a few people on the streets, but five guys on Harley’s have cornered a guy.”
“On my way,” Razor growled.
I hopped out my cab and the closer I got, the louder I heard the voice I should not have.
“Move out of my fucking way, you big ass beast.” She said.
Oh, fuck no.
Fuck no!?!
“Problem,” one of the guys that was atop his bike asked me.

“Yeah,” I nodded.
All three guys turned to face me and one of them had Shay by the arm.
“Boys, this one here has a problem.” The bigger guy got off of his bike, looking like he consumed way too much beer over the years.
Assessing the guys surrounded Shay, one had to be a leader, the others would follow him. Two were husky like they were former football players and the other was short but bulky. They did not seem like the active types, so counting the odds, I would have to take them before Razor came.
One of them stepped forward, he had a braided beard, with beads on the end, and unkempt hair. This one was their leader.
“You are?” He asked.
“This is Guardian territory.” I did not answer him.
“Ahh, heard about you angels, walking around trying to keep the streets safe.” The rest of them laughed. “What business you have here?”
“This is my town, what business do you have here?” I asked.
“We’re just passing through. Came to collect some information.” He pointed to Shay who was surprisingly quiet. “And we’ll be on our way.”
I nodded my head and assessed my boots before I spit on the ground.
“Problem is, she’s mine.” I pointed to Shay. Her eyebrows rose, but I sent her a quick look of ‘shut the fuck up.’

“Oh, now the little lady didn’t say she belonged to no one. Now did she fellas?” The leader asked.
They all shook their heads and grunted various versions of their bullshit no’s.
“I see.” I stepped closer to the leader and growled, “But I’m telling you, she’s mine.”

Dangerous Love by Ray Norman

Ray Norman spent most of his life in far-flung corners of the globe, working on a long-term development projects and living out his calling as a Christian professional. By the time he arrived in the Islamic Republic of Mauritania around the turn of the millennium, he was a veteran of life as an expat, at home in countries and cultures not his own. But in 2001, the world was about to change-and so was Ray’s life.

In the aftermath of 9/11-a time when tensions between Muslim and Western culture were peaking-Ray and his daughter, Hannah, made the short drive from their home to the Mauritanian beach. But instead of spending the afternoon enjoying the waves and the water, father and daughter found themselves hurtling back to the city, each with a bullet-hole pumping blood into the floorboards of their jeep.

This personal account and testimony of Ray Norman was very poignant and moving. Normally, I do not read a lot of non-fiction books because it takes me a long time to read them. It did take me a minute to read this one but  I was glad that I did. Mr. Norman is a Christian and he lives to serve God. I admired his ability to lead his family and seeking God on a daily basis. In the book, he is currently on a mission trip in Nouakchott, the Capitol of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania. He works for World Vision. During his time there, he and his daughter are shot by one of the local natives of Mauritania. Instantly, his world is changed and his trust and faith in God is tested. Most of all, he must forgive the person that has done what seems like an unforgivable act. I think the story was told very well. I also like how the author helped me to visual what Mauritania must look like in addition to the culture and people there. I also liked how the author explained how the shooting affected his family & not just himself. I definitely would recommend this book. A very different read.

This book was provided to me by BookLook Bloggers in exchange for a review.

Review of Reconstructing Jada Channing by Savannah J. Frierson

jadaAn Ames woman in love is a precarious place to be; however, Jada Channing falls in love with Aaron McKensie, a wealthy and gorgeous man she met at a recreation center where she volunteered during college. One night of passionate lovemaking results in a pregnancy, and her life takes a dramatic turn. She and Aaron plan to get married and raise their baby together, but his father interrupts their plan to be a family. Three years later, Jada and Aaron see each other again at a party in Atlanta and the sparks fly, but Jada has a secret. They have a son. A son that Aaron believed to have been aborted. Once she makes the decision to tell Aaron about their son, she fears he will take him away from her. He has another idea in mind, though. He wants to be a family.

I truly enjoyed this story. This was not your typical happily-ever-after read in which everything goes perfectly right. Jada and Aaron were in love with each other, but they also endured many obstacles such as stereotypes and racism. Jada also had trust issues with men because of the reputation of Ames women falling in love with unavailable men and being abandoned by them. For years, her grandmother had instilled this fear in her and, therefore, caused her not too fully trust men. I frowned upon this because Jada just could not enjoy a good thing.

I really liked her best friend, Shae, because she always encouraged Jada no matter what. I loved Aaron’s mom because she accepted Jada and her son. She didn’t look down on her or make her feel less than a woman. I truly despised Aaron’s father because he felt that money took care of everything and he thought Jada was a gold digger. He could not see that his actions were truly hurtful to not only Jada but also to his son.

Overall, I would definitely recommend this book to others because it was very moving and imparted powerful messages throughout.
